Ron Rutland

Caddie, Producer, Event Manager

On the 30th June 2013, fatter and un-fitter than ever, having sold his life’s possessions, and never having spent more than a handful of nights in a tent, South African sports event manager Ron Rutland left Cape Town to embark on a world first – a single continuous journey through every country on mainland Africa. This unsupported solo bicycle journey to watch the 2015 Rugby World Cup took 27 months, covered 42,000km through 75 countries, before, with a lifetime of stories later, Ron rode into the UK having successfully completed his world-first attempt.

It was a journey and expedition that would forever change Ron's life, as well as in many ways some of those that have heard and shared in his stories - the incredible humanity and goodness and the best of the human spirit that Ron encountered in such a diverse ranges of countries and cultures flies in the face of so much 'conventional wisdom' and preconceived ideas and perceptions that so many of us have about so much of the world.

After a bit of hiatus spent on the corporate speaking circuit, Ron went on and completed another endurance charity adventure, this time by walking 2,000km in 80 days across Mongolia in 2017 with a golfing fanatical rugby friend of his, Adam Rolston, as they set a world record for The Longest Hole ever played, and even more importantly raised a significant amount of money for ‘sport for good’ projects supported by the Laureus Sport For Good Foundation, a cause and purpose very close to Ron’s heart.

Ron is currently planning the answer to ‘what next?’!
