Hugely experienced high-altitude specialist Rick Allen has been involved in top level climbing in the Himalaya since the early 1980s.
In 1985 he attempted the still-unclimbed NE Ridge of Everest and, with Nick Kekus, made a nine-day first ascent of the South Face of Ganesh II. Other pioneering climbs include the North Face Direct on Dhaulagiri. He’s perhaps best known for his 2012 first ascent of Nanga Parbat’s Mazeno Ridge with Sandy Allan, a staggering climb that earned them the Piolet d’Or. This technical and highly committing 10km ridgeline is the longest on any 8000m peak and required an 18-day round trip from base camp, five of those without food, and three without water.
