The London Metro said, “Jammed in a Crevice”. The Daily Mail said, “They’ve Cracked It” and The Star stated “It’s Tough at the Top”. As Tom Randall says, “What made the popular media interested in this obscure niche of climbing, I really don’t know. Within just a few hours I was asked to do an interview with BBC Radio Sheffield and one for BBC News 24 – crikey, I thought – do they actually know what an offwidth is?”
Filmmakers Paul Diffley and Chris Alstrin documented Tom Randall and Pete Whittaker’s ‘wide boyz’ trip to the States, the story of two climbers who searched out the widest, dirtiest and hardest offwidths that this planet has to offer. The journey, the training, the routes and the failures – the whole story, no holds barred. It's not about the grade, it's about the experience and when it comes to The Wide the experience is the same for everyone. This testament to offwidth pain and suffering shows for the first time, courtesy of RAB and Patagonia. (PS try the Crack Machine in the Festival Marquee if you dare!)
NOTE: This is the World Film Premiere of the full feature-length film.
