Kendal Mountain Festival is excited to announce the launch of the 2018 Photography Competition, presented by OSPREY.
Now in its 11th year, this prestigious competition has cemented a reputation for discovering new talent and celebrating some of the most captivating imagery from the world of outdoor adventure.
This year the Grand Prize winner will walk away with a £500 cash prize, with £200 awarded to each category winner + sponsor prizes! Runners up will also be awarded sponsor prizes. The youth category winner will receive £200 worth of vouchers of their choice.
All photos will be displayed in our exhibition at the Brewery Arts Centre over the festival weekend and will also be available to festival-goers to purchase in postcard format.
In a world where everyone seems to be taking photographs, our panel of distinguished judges has to select the images that stand out from the crowd. Strong composition, distinctive style, a contemporary feel and an innovative approach all play a part in the final selection.
Our goal is to bring together the best images from across the globe that can leave lasting impressions on the viewer.
Last year, the winners took us soaring above the clouds, exploring the deepest caves and left us mesmerised by the majestic Northern Lights.
This year we are introducing four exciting new categories of ‘Mountain Culture’ (supported by Julbo), ‘Climb - Youth Category' (supported by the University of Cumbria), ‘For the Love of the Water’ (supported by Finisterre), and ‘Your View of the Lake District National park - Smartphone Category’ (supported by the Lake District National Park) which add to the popular themes of ‘Mountain Landscapes’ (supported by The John Muir Trust), ‘Urban Adventure’ (supported by Stance) and ‘Adventure in the Outdoors’ (supported by TRIBE).
Our competition is open to all. We look forward to seeing an exciting variety of submissions.
Henry Iddon, KMF Arts Officer and professional photographer, says: “Still images have always played an important part in sharing peoples’ experiences of the outdoors. This year we’re excited to see how photographers will interpret our new categories”
Jonathan Petty, Osprey Marketing Director, says: “We’re thrilled to announce that Osprey will be the 2018 headline sponsor of the Kendal Mountain Festival Photography Competition. We look forward to seeing an array of breath-taking images from around the globe which capture the spirit of the outdoors. We are proud to be part of a competition which celebrates the talented yet undiscovered photographers who are out wandering the wilderness”
The overall Grand Prize winner will receive £500 + OSPREY sponsored prizes (an expedition bundle: a rolling transporter travel bag, a mutant climbing travel bag and a selection of accessories)

Entries are charged at £5 / $7 for 5 photos.
Why do we charge an entry fee?
There are two reasons for charging an entry fee. We obviously need to cover our costs in running the competition – the technical platform, printing, prizes, etc. But, more importantly, we want to make sure that we give our full attention to the best photos – by charging a small fee, we hope that people will be sending us their best work.
