Crux is a small brand that develops and manufactures products purely for mountaineering. We started out in 2002 with just 5 products: 4 backpacks and a tent. Since then the crux range has grown, and today includes sleeping bags, down jackets and hardshells. But each of our product ranges remains quite small – usually only half a dozen styles at most – as we target only climbing and closely-related activities.
Our ambition is really only to make great products, knowing that they are not for everyone, but that they are the right ones for a few. All our gear is designed from personal experience. We use what are the best materials and components purely on the basis of performance. Our factories, in the Far East and Europe, are small family affairs with whom we have worked for a long time.
Crux was founded by Carol McDermott. Carol is a Kiwi now living in France. Born, bred and educated in New Zealand, Carol gained a degree in Chemicals & Materials Engineering from Auckland University. After some years working in industry, a short climbing sabbatical evolved into an extended 7-year climbing holiday. Over this period, Carol developed into a moderately competent alpinist with extensive experience stretching from New Zealand’s Southern Alps to the Andes, the Himalaya, the Caucasus, the Karakorum, Patagonia and the European Alps.
