International Film Competition 2017
At the heart of the Festival is the International Film Competition, awarding 12 sought-after film prizes through an independent jury, plus four Film Active prizes awarded to young filmmakers.
This year we received a record-breaking number of film entries. Over 90 made it through pre-selection, which will now be screened in ten venues across Kendal; a total of 134 film sessions over the four days.
We’ve made some changes to the way that films are screened, not something we undertake lightly. Our individual film programmes have been shortened from three hours to two, although the actual quantity of screening time remains the same over the Festival. We have also programmed them into 13 new themes to allow you to experience what we believe is the most thrilling, evocative, uplifting, flowing and above all enjoyable cinema adventure at Kendal.
We believe that the best films shout way beyond their genre, and grab the hearts of anyone from any tribe. Watching films just about rocks, or just about the sky, misses the way different adventures share the same values, challenges and emotions.
We are also proud that we attract many film premières (World, European or UK) with 32 being screened this year. The Festival is acknowledged by filmmakers as the foremost opportunity to showcase their latest films and we are delighted that over 55 filmmakers are joining us this year from across the world.

For 2017, our Film Jury included David Holbrooke, Michaela Tracy, James Woodroffe, Emma Brennand and is chaired by Keme Nzerem.
